Theo Research · The State of Small Business Websites 2026

Nearly half of small business websites get zero visitors from Google.

Between August 2, 2026 and September 15, 2026, business owners ran Theo's free audit on 5,543 websites with their own domain. We pulled the search data on every one. Of the 3,646 sites Semrush had traffic data for, 47% get an estimated zero visitors a month from Google search, 64% get fewer than 10, and the median site gets 1. This is what the small business websites that come to us actually look like.

Search traffic

How much traffic does a small business website get?

Not much. Of the 3,646 sites Semrush had search data for, 47% receive an estimated zero visitors a month from Google search and 64% receive fewer than 10. The median is 1 visitor a month. Only 9% of sites clear 1,000 visitors a month, and those are the businesses most people picture when they imagine a website that "works."

The true share with no search traffic is probably higher. Another 1,897 audited domains returned no search data at all, which usually means the domain has never ranked for anything Semrush tracks. Their median audit score is 28. Counting them as zero puts the no-traffic share at 65%. We report the conservative 47% as the headline.

Short answer: the typical small business website gets about 1 visitor a month from Google search, and roughly half get none.

Trust

Most of these sites have almost no authority to their name.

Semrush Authority Score is a 0 to 100 estimate of a domain's overall strength, combining the quality and quantity of its backlinks, its estimated organic traffic and spam signals. It is a third-party estimate, not a Google metric, and Google says such scores are not among its ranking signals. It is still the best available yardstick for how much of the web vouches for a business. 65% of small business websites score 5 or less, 86% score 10 or less, and the median is 2. The median site has 125 referring domains, but most of those are low quality directories and scrapers that Google discounts.

This is why weak trust and authority signals are flagged as a top issue in 95% of audits. A site can be well designed, fast and clear and still be invisible, because almost nothing credible on the web points to it.

Short answer: the median small business website has a Semrush Authority Score of 2 out of 100, and 86% sit at 10 or below.

Audit score vs. traffic

The audit score sorts sites the way their traffic does.

Theo's audit scores each site from 0 to 100 on visibility, trust, clarity and conversion signals, and the search data is one of its inputs, so a relationship with traffic is expected by construction. This is a consistency check, not an independent test: the bands show that the score sorts sites the way their traffic does, and how wide the gap between the bands is. Sites under 30 are mostly invisible. Sites above 70 are getting thousands of visitors a month.

The healthy sites are not doing anything exotic. They rank for hundreds of specific searches because they have pages that answer them, and they have earned links from real organizations. Both are slow, steady work, which is exactly the work most owners never get to.

By industry

Online stores have it worst. Health and beauty do best.

Each audit records the business type in plain language. We grouped those descriptions into six industries. Standalone online stores make up 41% of the sample and have the lowest median score and the highest share with no search traffic. Local service businesses do somewhat better, largely because local searches are less competitive than product searches.

Most common findings

Trust and visibility dominate the issues that matter most.

Each audit lists the three to five issues costing the business the most, so this is a picture of what gets prioritized, not a full inventory of everything wrong with a site. We grouped the 4 median issues per site by theme. Trust dominates. Competitors taking the searches and ranking for almost nothing come next. Speed, mobile and technical faults, the things most website checkers lead with, made the top issues in only 3% of audits.

Short answer: when the issues are ranked by cost to the business, trust and visibility come first and design or speed almost never do.

Questions this data answers

The questions owners actually ask.

How much traffic does a small business website get?

Very little from search. Across 3,646 small business websites with Semrush data, the median site received 1 visitor a month from Google search, 47% received none, and 64% received fewer than 10. Only 9% received more than 1,000. These figures cover unpaid Google search visits only, so direct, social and referral traffic are on top of them.

What percentage of small business websites get no traffic from Google?

47% of the sites with search data showed an estimated zero monthly visitors from Google search. Counting the 1,897 audited domains Semrush had no record of at all, which usually means the domain has never ranked, the share rises to about 65%.

What is a good Authority Score for a small business website?

Most small business websites sit far lower than owners expect. Semrush Authority Score runs 0 to 100. The median in this dataset is 2 out of 100 and 86% score 10 or below. Sites that scored 70 or higher on the audit had a median authority of 24, so anything in the 15 to 30 range already puts a local business ahead of most competitors.

Why do most small business websites get so little traffic?

Trust and visibility, more than design. 95% of audits flagged weak trust and authority signals as a top issue, meaning few credible links and thin business signals. 45% found competitors taking the searches, and 39% found the site appearing for almost no searches at all. Speed, mobile and technical faults made the top issues in only 3%, though the audit ranks issues by cost rather than counting every fault.

How many small businesses have a website?

Roughly four in five small employers have a website and about 17% still do not, according to the sources gathered in our small business website statistics roundup. This report looks at the next question: of the businesses that do have a site, how many are actually being found.

How can I check how much traffic my own website gets?

Google Search Console shows your real search clicks if you have it connected. If you do not, Theo's free website audit pulls your estimated search traffic, keywords, authority score and backlinks in about a minute, and shows where you sit against the numbers on this page.

Methodology

How we built this.

Sample. 5,543 distinct small business websites, each on its own domain, were audited by their owners or staff through Theo's free website audit between August 2, 2026 and September 15, 2026. Each domain counts once, using its most recent audit.

Search data. Monthly organic traffic, organic keywords, authority score, backlinks and referring domains come from Semrush at the time of each audit. 3,646 sites had traffic data and 4,976 had link data. Traffic figures are Semrush estimates of Google search visits, not analytics, and they understate direct, social and referral traffic.

Audit score and issues. Theo's audit reads the live site, its search data, reviews and competitors, then scores the site 0 to 100 and lists the issues costing it the most customers with a severity rating. Issue themes were grouped by keyword matching on issue titles and descriptions. Industry groups were assigned by keyword matching on the free-text business description.

Limits. This is a self-selected sample of businesses curious enough to audit their site, and it skews toward online stores. It is not a random sample of all small businesses. Because the headline traffic share excludes 1,897 domains with no search data at all, it is likely conservative.

Updates. The dataset grows by roughly 4,000 audits a month. We plan to refresh these figures periodically and will note the date at the top of the page.
