How sites on each platform do on Google
From Theo's audit of 5,974 small business websites (August 2 to September 22, 2026). Traffic is the estimated monthly visitors from Google search, and the shares are of the sites on each platform with search data; the score is the median audit score, out of 100, for every site audited on that platform. | Platform | Sites with search data | Estimated zero Google visitors | Fewer than 10 visitors | Median audit score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | 1,125 | 50% | 69% | 34 |
| WordPress | 687 | 35% | 51% | 41 |
| Wix | 272 | 47% | 64% | 38 |
| Squarespace | 177 | 49% | 64% | 38 |
| GoDaddy Website Builder | 145 | 56% | 74% | 31 |
| Weebly / Square Online | 54 | 52% | 76% | 28 |
The spread between platforms is real but small next to the spread inside each one. A WordPress site with five service pages and a page for every town beats a WordPress site with a home page and a contact form, and the same holds on Wix. That is why the audit looks at the pages, not the logo in the footer. If you are choosing a platform, the website builder comparison covers the tradeoffs; if you already have a site, run the free audit and see what is holding it back.
Frequently asked questions
How does the detector know what a website is built with?
It reads the site's homepage the way a browser does and looks for the marks each platform leaves: a generator tag in the page head, the response headers a platform sends, and the scripts and asset paths a platform always loads. Theo's audit runs the same check on every site it reads.
What platforms does it recognize?
WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, GoDaddy Website Builder, Weebly and Square Online, Webflow, Framer, Duda, Jimdo, BigCommerce, HubSpot, Drupal, Joomla, Ghost, Hugo, Gatsby, Blogger, and sites built by Theo, which it recognizes from public DNS even when the page carries no mark. A site that matches none of them is reported as custom code or a builder that hides its marks.
What else does it show?
Who serves the site (the host, and the network in front of it such as Cloudflare), who runs the domain's DNS and email, the analytics and ad pixels on the page (Google Analytics, Tag Manager, Meta, TikTok and others), the booking, chat, payment and store tools it loads, the WordPress theme when there is one, and whether HTTPS is enforced. All of it comes from the public homepage and the domain's public DNS records; nothing private is read.
Does the platform decide how a site ranks?
Not on its own. In Theo's audit of 5,974 small business websites, the share of sites with an estimated zero visitors a month from Google search runs from 35 percent of the 687 WordPress sites with search data to 56 percent of the 145 GoDaddy Website Builder sites with search data, but on every platform the sites that get found are the ones with pages that answer specific searches and links from real organizations. Change the pages before you change the platform.
Can I check my competitor's site?
Yes. The detector reads any public homepage. The free audit goes further and shows the estimated traffic, rankings and search health of any site, no login needed.
