Compare: Theo vs GoDaddy

Theo vs GoDaddy Website Builder for a small business: what each one leaves to you

GoDaddy's website products are a template editor (Websites + Marketing) and the credit-metered Airo AI Builder, the only builder priced on godaddy.com as of October 2026, and under its own support terms both leave writing the pages, adding them to the site and getting ranked to you. Theo builds the site from a chat, hosts it, and on Starter and Pro does that search work every week. Your domain and email stay at GoDaddy either way.

Facts checked October 2, 2026.

For a small business that wants someone working on the website after launch, Theo is the pick. GoDaddy hands you a template editor (Websites + Marketing) or its newer Airo AI Builder, and its own Statement of Support lists adding content, creating pages and getting ranked as unsupported. Theo builds the site from a chat, hosts it, makes your edits, and on Starter and Pro writes the pages, fixes technical issues and submits them to Google every week. The site with hosting is $29.99 a month on Basic; the growth work is $69.99 a month on Starter, free for the first 30 days; Pro is $129.99.

GoDaddy Website Builder vs Theo: who does the work after launch

Websites + Marketing is a template you edit by hand; Airo AI Builder generates custom-coded pages from a description and bills in AI credits. The full comparison adds Wix, Squarespace and WordPress.

How much GoDaddy costs compared with Theo

As of October 2026, Airo AI Builder is the only website builder on GoDaddy's pricing pages: a Free tier with 50 AI credits a month that cannot keep a site published; Airo AI Builder Starter at $9.99 a month billed annually or $19.99 month to month, with 150 credits and one published site; Professional at $24.99 annual or $49.99 monthly with 300 credits; Ultimate at $99.99 annual or $199.99 monthly with 750 credits. GoDaddy does not say what the annual tiers renew at, and unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle. Websites + Marketing, the template builder its help center still documents, was last priced on godaddy.com on September 30, 2026: Basic $9.99, Premium $14.99 and Commerce $20.99 a month on an annual term for the first year, renewing at $16.99, $29.99 and $34.99, which were also the month-to-month prices.

Theo bills monthly with no contract: Basic is $29.99 a month for the build, hosting, security and 1,500 chat credits; Starter is $69.99, free for the first 30 days, and adds the weekly growth work and 4,500 credits; Pro is $129.99 with 7,000 credits and read-only code access. The pricing page has the detail; the first build is free and you see the result before choosing a plan.

Does GoDaddy do SEO for you

GoDaddy includes SEO as a tool you run: the SEO wizard suggests keywords, the AI visibility tool lists opportunities, and GoDaddy's own SEO Services page says the self-serve tools still require the customer to make the changes. Airo AI Builder advertises automatic on-page optimization for Google and AI answer engines, yet its Statement of Support, like Websites + Marketing's, lists getting ranked as unsupported. Done-for-you help is sold separately: SEO Services, priced by phone consultation, and Website Design Services, a WordPress build from a $499.99 one-time fee plus an annual hosting fee, as of October 2026.

On Starter and Pro, Theo does the work instead of suggesting it: keyword and competitor research, new pages and posts, technical fixes, page speed, Search Console submissions, and working toward citations in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Drafts wait in the Growth tab until you publish them; none of it uses chat credits.

Of the 145 GoDaddy Website Builder sites with search data in Theo's audit of 5,974 small business websites, 56 percent got an estimated zero visitors a month from Google search, a higher share than the Wix, Squarespace, Shopify or WordPress sites in The State of Small Business Websites 2026.

Can I keep my domain and email at GoDaddy

Yes; Theo asks you to move neither. The domain stays registered at GoDaddy, and when the new site is ready you point it at Theo, root and www, turn off forwarding and parking, and leave the email records alone; nothing transfers, so GoDaddy's 60-day transfer lock does not apply. The GoDaddy site stays live until the records update, usually a few hours; connecting a domain from GoDaddy or any registrar walks through each step.

Email is a separate GoDaddy subscription (Microsoft 365 from GoDaddy) that a Theo site never touches. If your mailbox came bundled with a website plan, ask GoDaddy before canceling that plan.

What to do with a GoDaddy online store

A GoDaddy store needs its own decision; export the products first, since GoDaddy exports them as a CSV file and deletes a downgraded store's products and orders after 30 days. Theo gives you three options, in this order.

  1. Move the store to Shopify, which Theo recommends and connects to directly: products, prices and stock appear on your Theo site with a cart, and checkout completes on Shopify.
  2. Keep the GoDaddy store and move it to shop.yourdomain.com, with the Theo site on the main domain linking to its products.
  3. If that is too hard, keep the current GoDaddy site and store where they are and put a separate Theo site on a subdomain such as blog.yourdomain.com.

How to move a GoDaddy website to Theo

GoDaddy documents no export for a Websites + Marketing site, and none is needed: Theo reads the live site from its address. Run the free audit first; it shows what the current GoDaddy site earns from search before anything moves. Moving a GoDaddy website to Theo covers redirects and timing.

  1. Give Theo your GoDaddy site's address; the preview matches the look, usually within minutes, and you refine it in chat.
  2. Publish when it reads right; it sits on a temporary address until your domain points at it.
  3. Point the domain at Theo: root and www, forwarding and parking off, email records untouched; the GoDaddy site stays up until the records update.
  4. With the domain live, connect Analytics and Search Console; old addresses that still get traffic are redirected, and on Starter and Pro the growth work switches on.

The short answer

Pick Theo if

You want the site built, hosted and worked on for you, your domain and email left at GoDaddy, and changes made by typing a sentence. The site with hosting is $29.99 a month on Basic; the weekly growth work is $69.99 a month on Starter, free for the first 30 days; Pro is $129.99.

What GoDaddy leaves to you

Writing the pages and posts and getting ranked, which both of GoDaddy's Statements of Support list as unsupported, plus acting on the SEO and AI visibility suggestions yourself. Airo AI Builder credits expire each billing cycle; a Websites + Marketing site has no documented export; done-for-you help is sold separately.

Frequently asked questions

How much does GoDaddy Website Builder cost compared with Theo?

As of October 2026 GoDaddy prices Airo AI Builder at $9.99, $24.99 or $99.99 a month billed annually, or $19.99, $49.99 and $199.99 monthly, for Starter, Professional and Ultimate; no renewal price is stated. Basic is $29.99 a month on Theo, Starter $69.99 with the growth work and 30 days free, Pro $129.99.

Can I use Theo and keep my domain and email at GoDaddy?

Yes. Point the domain at your Theo site, root and www, with the email records left alone; it stays registered at GoDaddy, and your email is a separate GoDaddy subscription Theo never touches.

Does GoDaddy do the SEO for you?

Not inside the website plans: GoDaddy's Statement of Support lists getting ranked as unsupported, and its SEO Services is sold separately, priced by phone. On Theo's Starter and Pro the search work is part of the plan.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I move my GoDaddy website to Theo?

Rankings often shift for a few weeks after any move, and the three things that limit the loss, the same domain, the pages carried across and redirects for the old addresses that still get traffic, are all part of a Theo build. The redirects go in once Search Console is connected, and on Starter and Pro the growth work submits the new pages to Google.

What happens to my GoDaddy online store if I switch to Theo?

Three paths, in this order: move the store to Shopify, which Theo recommends and connects to directly; keep the GoDaddy store on shop.yourdomain.com with the Theo site on the main domain; or leave both where they are and run a separate Theo site on a subdomain such as blog.yourdomain.com.

Who owns the website, and can I cancel Theo?

On Theo you own the site and its content and can copy it anytime; cancel anytime and the confirmation shows when the subscription ends. Airo AI Builder lets you download your code; GoDaddy documents no export for a Websites + Marketing site.
